Dead Orthodoxy

“We are controlling our religion, my friends, instead of being controlled by it” ―Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones grew up in Llangeitho in mid-West Wales at the turn of the 20th century. This small, rural village was once the center of a great revival in the 18th century under the preaching of Daniel Rowland, “the apostle of Wales”. Yet what was once a church richly blessed with the power of the Holy Spirit had become, by the time of Lloyd-Jones’s youth 150 years later, a sad picture of dead orthodoxy. Indeed, by the time of the next great revival in Wales in 1904-05, the elders of the church in Llangeitho dismissed the work as a product of mere enthusiasm. As such, Lloyd-Jones had seen firsthand the dangers presented by dead orthodoxy; dangers which are brought out in the following sermon from his series on revival.
