Dr. Lloyd-Jones on Mental Illness

by Greg Jones
President, MLJ Trust

This week we bring you Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones's address given at the Christian Medical Fellowship in 1974. Prior to the commencement of his ministry, Dr Lloyd-Jones was an eminent physician in the UK. A member of the prestigious Royal College Physicians, he studied at the reputable St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, and rose through the ranks of the medical profession to become the Chief Clinical Assistant to the Royal Physician, Sir Thomas Horder. Indeed, had Dr Lloyd-Jones continued in the medical profession, he may well have taken the position of his mentor by becoming the next Royal Physician, one of the foremost medical position in the country.

Throughout his ministry, Dr Lloyd-Jones kept his interest in medicine, keeping up to date with the medical journals and books of his time. Additionally, he was asked to speak at gatherings of Christian clinicians such as the one found at the link below.

Listen: “Body Mind and Spirit“

While this sermon may be over forty years old, its content is by no means outdated. Indeed, the intervening years have only served to exponentially amplify the pandemic of mental illness which plagues the West, making this address an important topic for today’s church and society.
